Biden deploys missile defense system to Israel amid Iranian threats

U.S. President Joe Biden informed Congress on Tuesday that he has directed the deployment of a ballistic missile defense system and U.S. service members to Israel, following a large-scale missile attack from Iran earlier this month. The move is part of the United States’ ongoing effort to support Israel’s defense and counter Iranian threats in the region.
In a letter addressed to Congressional leaders, Biden outlined the recent developments in Israel and the U.S. response to the escalating tensions. On October 1, Iran launched over 200 ballistic missiles at Israel, marking one of the largest missile barrages by Iran against its regional adversary.
Biden highlighted the longstanding U.S. commitment to Israel’s security, stating, “The outstanding performance of our service members across the Middle East, working in strong support of Israeli forces, contributed to a historic defense of Israel against Iranian threats.” He emphasized that dozens of the Iranian missiles were intercepted before they could cause civilian casualties in Israel.
The letter highlighted that the United States has made significant adjustments to its military posture in the region, in response to the Iranian strike. These measures include extending the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group, replacing the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and deploying additional destroyers, many equipped with ballistic missile defense capabilities. The guided-missile submarine USS Georgia, the USS Wasp Amphibious Ready Group, and various fighter and attack squadrons have also been positioned to bolster defense capabilities.
“The United States forces will remain postured in the region to serve important national interests, including the protection of United States persons and property from attacks by Iran and Iranian-aligned militias, and to continue to support the defense of Israel, to which our commitment remains ironclad,” Biden said in his letter.
The deployment of the missile defense system and U.S. personnel is aimed at preventing further missile attacks on Israel, as tensions between Iran and Israel continue to rise. Biden asserted that these actions are in line with his constitutional responsibilities as Commander in Chief to protect U.S. interests abroad.
The letter also mentioned the recent cooperation between U.S. and Israeli forces, including a successful defense against Iranian threats on April 13, 2024. This partnership has been essential in ensuring Israel’s safety and demonstrating the U.S. resolve to deter aggression from Iran and its allies in the region.
Biden concluded by reaffirming the administration’s commitment to Israel’s security, stating, “Our commitment remains ironclad.” The U.S. military will continue to work closely with Israeli defense forces to maintain stability and counter threats from Iran.
