Current Mayor of Tunceli Fatih Mehmet Macoglu runs for mayorship in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district, looking to change governance model, lags behind in third in polls

Fatih Mehmet Macoglu, the mayor of Tunceli, well-known as “the communist mayor,” is running for the position of mayor in Istanbul’s Kadikoy district in the March 31 elections.

Representing the Communist Party of Türkiye (TKP), Macoglu’s campaign follows his term as mayor in Tunceli. He believes his governance style he proposes for Kadikoy is enough to sway voters. However, the Kadikoy district has historically supported the Republican People’s Party (CHP) and looks unlikely to switch to communism.

A recent ORC Research survey has indicated Macoglu currently sits in third place in the polls, with 19.1%, behind candidates from the CHP and the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) candidates.
