Beware of unlicensed cosmetics in Türkiye: 110 out of 162 products found risky

The Türkiye Medicines and Medical Devices Agency (TITCK) has identified significant issues in the cosmetics sector after conducting routine inspections during the July-September period of 2024.

Out of 162 cosmetic products evaluated, 110 were deemed non-compliant with regulations.

Fines and product removals for violations

As a result of these non-compliances, a total of ₺381,250 ($11,124.11) in administrative fines was issued. The agency also carried out inspections on biocidal products, such as hand sanitizers and antibacterial liquid soaps, with a particular focus on unlicensed and unregulated products.

During these inspections, 27 products were flagged – nine were found to pose health risks, 14 were non-compliant and five violated technical regulations. These products have been withdrawn from the market and destroyed, and the agency imposed a total of ₺1.15 million in administrative penalties.

Do not buy cosmetics online, warns expert

Nurten Saydan, head of the All Pharmacist Employers Union (TEIS), emphasized the need for stricter controls and heavier penalties for those risking public health.

“Do not buy personal care and cosmetic products online. Pharmacies are the safest and most reliable places to purchase such items to avoid health risks. Many low-quality and counterfeit products available on the internet pose serious threats to consumers’ health. Fake versions of well-known cosmetic brands can easily be found online.

Therefore, it is crucial that the Ministry of Health increases its oversight, particularly over online promotions and sales of cosmetics. Consistent monitoring of production sites, as well as internet, TV, and radio channels, is essential. Bringing these products sold outside of pharmacies under strict control is critical to protecting public health.”
