Israel targets UNIFIL peacekeepers in southern Lebanon

United Nations peacekeepers in Lebanon (UNIFIL) have come under fire from Israeli forces, according to a report from a U.N. official. Over a 24-hour period, Israeli soldiers opened fire on UNIFIL positions in three separate incidents in southern Lebanon.

The report indicates that an Israeli tank targeted a surveillance tower located at UNIFIL’s main base in Nakura. As a result of the tank fire, two peacekeeping soldiers sustained minor injuries.

Recent escalation along the Blue Line is causing widespread destruction of towns and villages in south Lebanon, while rockets continue to be launched towards Israel, including civilian areas.

UNIFIL released a statement confirming that its headquarters and nearby positions in southern Lebanon were repeatedly struck due to crossfire between Israeli forces and Hezbollah.
