Abdulkadir Uraloglu, Türkiye’s Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, addressed ongoing discussions about the messaging and social media application Discord.

He clarified that there are currently no plans for limiting access, but they’re investigating the feasibility of implementing barriers. He emphasized that this isn’t about restricting people but about ensuring that any necessary requirements are met.

While on a flight from Istanbul Sabiha Gokcen Airport to Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Uraloglu spoke to reporters about recent allegations surrounding Discord, including issues of blackmail, pedophilia and sexual exploitation targeting children and young people.

He mentioned that a meeting was held over the weekend with the interior, justice and family, and social services ministries to address these concerns.

Uraloglu reiterated that they do not want to adopt a prohibitive approach but will not hesitate to use their authority to protect young people. He stressed the importance of thorough discussions regarding any potential restrictions, noting that no formal decision has been reached.

Uraloglu also urged parents to take a more active role in monitoring their children’s internet usage. He encouraged families to closely track the websites and social media platforms their children visit, highlighting that there are individuals with harmful intentions who seek to exploit and confuse them. He emphasized the need for families to spend more time with their children.

This response comes amid increasing concerns over online safety and the protection of minors in digital environments.
