China, N. Korea celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations amid evolving alliances

In a display of solidarity on the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, Chinese President Xi Jinping and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening ties between their nations. The two leaders exchanged congratulatory messages on Sunday, emphasizing the importance of their longstanding alliance.

“China is willing to work with the North Korean side… to strengthen strategic communication and coordination, deepen friendly exchanges and cooperation, (and) write a new chapter in the traditional bilateral friendship,” Xi stated, as reported by the Chinese state news agency Xinhua. He highlighted the collaborative efforts of both countries in promoting regional peace and stability, asserting their mutual commitment to “uphold international fairness and justice.”

In response, Kim expressed North Korea’s dedication to furthering friendly relations with China, as noted by the North Korean state news agency KCNA. He emphasized Pyongyang’s intent to “steadily strive to consolidate and develop the friendly and cooperative relations between (North Korea) and China.”

This diplomatic exchange comes in the context of a renewed focus on cooperation following the easing of border restrictions that had been imposed during the COVID-19 pandemic. Analysts suggest that North Korea’s reliance on Chinese firms and banks remains crucial for circumventing international sanctions, which have significantly impacted its economy and military capabilities.

However, the dynamics of the relationship have become increasingly complex. North Korea has also been strengthening its ties with Russia, evidenced by Kim’s recent support for President Vladimir Putin amid the ongoing invasion of Ukraine. This shift raises questions about the future of the traditional Sino-North Korean alliance as both nations navigate their respective geopolitical landscapes.
