Israel signals imminent ground operation in Lebanon

Israel has informed Washington of its plans for a limited ground operation in Lebanon, a U.S. official confirmed to U.S.-based media outlet CBS. The operation, reportedly, could begin as soon as Monday.

This announcement follows a series of intense Israeli airstrikes targeting Hezbollah since September 23, which have resulted in over 960 deaths and 2,770 injuries, according to Lebanon’s Health Ministry.

Meanwhile, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant stated, “The next phase in the war against Hezbollah will begin soon.” Amid fears of a regional conflict, U.S. President Joe Biden urged an end to hostilities as Israel prepares for its ground operation.

Biden is aware of the plan

When asked if he was aware of Israel’s plans, Biden replied, “I’m more aware than you might know, and I’m comfortable with them stopping. We should have a cease-fire now.” The president noted that he spent two hours on the phone over the weekend discussing the situation and planned to speak with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu later in the day.

While Biden promised to update reporters on the call, no details have been released. The White House has not yet provided a formal readout of the conversation.

On the other hand, Israeli broadcaster KAN reported that Israeli forces are preparing for a limited ground operation in Lebanon, despite pressure from Washington, which continues to advocate for a cease-fire. Israeli officials claim that the operation aims to establish a buffer security zone in southern Lebanon, while the U.S. believes a resolution between Israel and Hezbollah is necessary to prevent a broader military confrontation.

The Washington Post reported that Israel has informed the Biden administration of its intent to begin the invasion imminently. Israeli forces began conducting raids into Lebanon on Monday.

Since September 23, Israel’s airstrikes have targeted what it calls Hezbollah positions, resulting in significant casualties. Among those killed are several Hezbollah leaders, including Hassan Nasrallah.

The ongoing conflict, which escalated following Hamas’s attack on Israel on October 7, 2023, has claimed nearly 41,600 lives, predominantly women and children. The international community has expressed concern that Israeli actions in Lebanon could further escalate the Gaza conflict into a wider regional war.
