Germany has announced that individuals who post, like or comment on the slogan “From the River to the Sea” in support of Palestine will be ineligible for citizenship.

According to a report from North German Broadcasting (NDR), the Interior Ministry’s new regulations disqualify those who use this slogan on social media from gaining citizenship. The ministry’s updated guidelines specifically cite the slogan as a basis for refusal.

Originally used by the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) in the 1960s, the slogan calls for the liberation of Palestine from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, covering present-day Israel.

Germany’s dual citizenship law, which came into effect on June 27, now factors social media behavior into eligibility for citizenship.
