Türkiye’s governing AK Party’s Istanbul mayoral candidate Murat Kurum expresses gratitude, accepts defeat, vows to maintain active engagement with Istanbul’s development
In the aftermath of the March 31 municipal elections, Murat Kurum, the ruling Justice and Development Party’s (AK Party) candidate for Istanbul mayor, acknowledged his defeat with a forthright and reflective speech.
His address not only expressed gratitude to his supporters but also delineated a clear path for his continued engagement in Istanbul’s political and social landscape.
Kurum opened his remarks with a note of thanks, emphasizing the collective effort of his campaign. “I express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey,” he said.
In his speech, Kurum echoed a tone of introspection and responsibility toward the voters’ decision, signifying a readiness to analyze and act upon the electorate’s message. He acknowledged the citizens’ support saying, “Our efforts in all 39 districts of Istanbul were a testament to our dedication. The warmth and support we received from every citizen is profoundly appreciated.”
“As Istanbul’s dedicated servant, I will persist in my endeavors for this city. We will be present among the people, in the streets, following President (Recep Tayyip) Erdogan’s guidance. Our nation’s messages are of utmost importance, and we are committed to interpreting and acting on these insights for a better future for our country,” he said.
The AK Party candidate also acknowledged the contributions of key political figures: “I extend my heartfelt thanks to President Erdogan and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) leader Devlet Bahceli. Their trust and support have been pivotal in this journey.”
“Today marks a new beginning for us,” Kurum exclaimed. “(We have been given) an opportunity to address our deficiencies and enhance our connection with citizens.”
Kurum’s speech also contained a message of unity and respect for the electoral process. “Every citizen who cast their vote has my gratitude, regardless of their preference,” he stated. “The enthusiasm we witnessed throughout the city was inspiring. We respect the will of the people as reflected in the ballot box and commit ourselves to fulfilling our duties in line with this mandate.”
Moreover, Kurum pledged to continue his engagement with the public. “From tomorrow onward, we will be on the ground, closely connecting with our citizens. This election is a turning point, a milestone for us to reassess and reinvigorate our efforts for the betterment of Istanbul,” he asserted.
This election represents a significant shift in Türkiye’s political dynamics, with the AK Party facing a notable challenge as the opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) achieved a historic victory.
