The spiritual leader of Catholics and the head of the Vatican, Pope Francis, has called on the international community to do everything possible to halt the rising tensions in Lebanon.

Speaking during his traditional audience on Wednesdays at the famous St. Peter’s Square, Pope Francis addressed the airstrikes being carried out by Israel in Lebanon.

“I have been deeply saddened by reports from Lebanon, where there has been heavy bombardment resulting in many casualties and destruction in recent days. I hope the international community will do everything in its power to stop this terrible escalation. This is unacceptable,” he stated.

Pope Francis expresses solidarity with Lebanon

Referring to the political and economic crises that have plagued Lebanon for years, as well as the 2020 explosion at the Port of Beirut, Pope Francis expressed his solidarity with the Lebanese people, stating, “I express my closeness to the people of Lebanon, who have suffered greatly in recent times.”

The Israeli Army launched airstrikes on Lebanon early in the morning on Sept. 23. The Lebanese Ministry of Health reported that over 550 people have lost their lives so far.
