Fried chicken replaces traditional BBQ among young Turks, study finds
A recent survey conducted by Doyuyo, one of Türkiye’s food brands, indicates that fried chicken is steadily overtaking traditional barbecue as the preferred meal for younger generations.
The Fried Chicken Consumption Habits Survey, which included 1,000 participants between the ages of 18 and 64, revealed that one in two people consume fried chicken at least once a week.
Fried chicken on the rise
According to the survey, 44% of respondents described their ideal fried chicken as “crispy,” with crispiness, well-done cooking, and served hot being the top factors for a satisfying meal. Additionally, 74% of respondents reported pairing their fried chicken with fries and condiments such as ketchup and mayonnaise. While men favored spicy sauces, women preferred ranch dressing.
The data also shows that fried chicken is most commonly consumed in shopping malls and restaurants (37%) and at home (30%). Younger consumers, particularly those aged 18 to 24, view fried chicken as a social activity and prefer to eat it in malls. In contrast, individuals aged 45 to 54 still favor grilling chicken over a barbecue.
Doyuyo to expand to Russia, Kuwait, and Azerbaijan
Doyuyo’s Chairman, Taylan Kaya, emphasized the brand in the local fast food market. “Doyuyo is the most preferred brand for one out of every two people who want fried chicken,” he said and added, “We currently operate 50 branches across Türkiye and are planning to expand to Russia, Kuwait, and Azerbaijan. By the end of 2025, we aim to have 100 locations across Türkiye.”
Consumers value health and hygiene
The survey also asked participants to evaluate fried chicken from a health perspective. Half of the respondents considered it a healthy option, citing the quality of ingredients and protein content as crucial factors.
In addition, 50% of fried chicken consumers described the brands they purchase from as “very reliable,” with hygiene and service being prioritized even above taste.
