Türkiye, Iraq unveil Silopi-Ceyhan pipeline under Development Road Project
Türkiye and Iraq are strengthening energy cooperation, positioning Türkiye as a key player in global energy security. The Development Road Project is advancing strategic initiatives in oil, gas, and electricity transmission.
Key details
Silopi-Ceyhan Pipeline: Alternative to Basra
- Currently, Basra is the sole exit point for Iraqi oil exports. However, the Silopi-Ceyhan Pipeline presents an alternative route.
- This pipeline, with a daily capacity of 1.5 million barrels, offers a potential solution to geopolitical risks or political uncertainties that could affect oil exports from Basra.
- Once fully operational, the pipeline would facilitate the transportation of oil via Türkiye to countries in the Mediterranean Basin, including Spain, France, Italy, Portugal, Greece, and Egypt. This could create a potential annual business volume of $50 billion between the two countries.
Despite its significant natural gas reserves, Iraq currently imports natural gas. Natural gas pipeline construction and increased local production could unlock significant cooperation potential in this sector. Investments and partnerships between Türkiye and Iraq could enable more efficient utilization of Iraq’s natural gas reserves.
Electricity transmission: Expanding cooperation
- Currently, Türkiye exports electricity to Iraq. However, infrastructure improvements could reverse this situation.
- Electricity transmission lines are emerging as another crucial area for cooperation. Türkiye emphasizes the importance of ensuring that energy projects benefit both parties.
- Upgrading infrastructure could facilitate more effective electricity transmission and further strengthen bilateral cooperation.
MoU signed to strengthen regional cooperation
- On April 22, 2024, during a visit to Iraq by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a memorandum of understanding was signed by Türkiye, Iraq, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) concerning the Development Road Project.
- Ministers from the four countries attended the signing ceremony, marking a significant step toward supporting the success of energy projects and enhancing regional energy security.
These strategic energy projects between Türkiye and Iraq have the potential to position Türkiye as a key player in global energy security. The cooperation not only strengthens bilateral relations but also contributes to the stability of regional and global energy markets.
