New Swedish FM Stenergard prioritizes strengthening ties with Türkiye
Newly appointed Swedish Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard expressed her commitment to strengthening relations with Türkiye – emphasizing collaboration within the NATO framework.
Stenergard, who succeeded Tobias Billstrom after his resignation on Sept. 4, highlighted the importance of maintaining close ties with Türkiye.
“I look forward to working closely with Türkiye, especially as our NATO ally. I am eager to enhance this collaboration,” Stenergard told Anadolu Agency (AA) on Wednesday.
Her appointment follows Sweden’s recent decision to join NATO, a diplomatic milestone achieved during Billstrom’s tenure.
Stenergard, previously head of migration, played a pivotal role in shaping Sweden’s immigration policies amid challenges like the refugee crisis.
Stenergard to visit Türkiye
Stating that Sweden’s policy on Palestine and Israel is peace-oriented, Stenergard said: “First of all, the weapons should be silenced and peace should be established in the region. There should be a two-state solution.”
In her new role, she is expected to prioritize Sweden’s proactive engagement within NATO and reinforce the country’s support for Ukraine in the face of Russian aggression.
Swedish state television SVT announced that Stenergard will make her first official foreign visit to Türkiye on Sept.18.
