House Republicans have released a report holding President Joe Biden’s administration responsible for the “horrific” withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021. The approximately 350-page report, the result of an 18-month investigation by House Foreign Affairs Committee Republicans, criticizes the administration for mishandling the evacuation process.

According to Republican Representative Michael McCaul, the administration had the necessary information and opportunities to safely evacuate personnel but prioritized its image over their safety.

Democrats have criticized the report for neglecting former President Donald Trump’s role in the withdrawal process. The report comes as a response to the chaotic evacuation and Taliban takeover of Kabul in August 2021, following the U.S. and international forces’ withdrawal as part of a February 2020 peace agreement.

The U.S. completed its withdrawal from Afghanistan on August 31, 2021.
