Iran’s supreme leader warns Israel of retaliation over Damascus strike
Iran’s Supreme Leader reaffirmed a strong warning to Israel, promising punishment, Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz promptly countered, stating, “Israel will respond and attack Iran”
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, reiterated a stern warning to Israel on Wednesday, vowing that it “will be punished” for a recent air strike in Damascus that resulted in the deaths of 7 Revolutionary Guards, including two generals.
“The evil regime made a mistake in this regard. It must be punished and will be punished,” during a televised speech following Eid al-Adha prayers in Tehran, Khamenei asserted.
“Israel will respond and attack Iran”
Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz swiftly responded with a statement on the social media platform X, stating in Persian, “If Iran attacks from its territory, Israel will respond and attack Iran.”
Khamenei condemned the April 1 strike, which destroyed the five-storey Iranian consulate building in the Syrian capital, citing violations of international agreements safeguarding the inviolability of diplomatic premises.
“The consulate and embassy offices in any country are the territory of that country,” he emphasized. “When they attacked our consulate, it means they attacked our territory.”
The Supreme Leader has consistently vowed retaliation for the strike, widely attributed to arch-enemy Israel.
In response to Iran’s threats of retaliation, Israel announced last week that it was bolstering its defenses and halting leave for combat units.
The longstanding animosity between Iran and Israel has led to a series of clandestine conflicts, with Iran accusing Israel of orchestrating sabotage attacks and assassinations targeting its nuclear program.
