Main opposition leader calls for elections, paving way for Erdogan’s candidacy
The leader of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP), Ozgur Ozel, has called for early elections, effectively giving President Recep Tayyip Erdogan the green light to run for office once again.
According to the constitution, Erdogan, who would be limited by the two-term rule if the elections are held on schedule, would need an early election decision to seek reelection. CHP Chairman Ozel announced his support for Erdogan’s reelection bid, stating, “Let Erdogan set the ballot for spring 2026; I have no doubt we can defeat him.”
In his statement, Ozel clarified that if elections are renewed before the end of President Erdogan’s term, he has the right to run one last time.
Claiming that the ruling AK Party is destined for failure, Ozel said, “Everyone is trying to pull Erdogan in one direction. The government is in a state of burnout. Ruling AK Party is experiencing the greatest turbulence in its history.”
Touching upon the country’s economic woes, Ozel added, “They have let minimum wage earners suffer under inflation; retirees were expecting a raise in their pensions. In January, they could buy 25 kilograms of minced meat, but now they can only buy 20 kilograms.”
Despite all the problems, Ozel expressed hope, saying, “I see sadness, but at the same time, there is great hope.”
