Celebrating 60 years of Türkiye-Moroccan migration in Belgium

Turkish and Moroccan communities in Belgium celebrated the 60th anniversary of the 1964 Labor Agreement with a reception. The event, held at the Liege Congress Center, was attended by Türkiye‘s Consul General in Brussels Umut Deniz and Morocco‘s Consul General in Liege and Luxembourg Abidin Abdulkadir.

The event showcased the rich cultures of both countries through displays of traditional artifacts and delectable treats. Guests were treated to a unique experience, savoring Moroccan delicacies alongside Turkish dishes. The evening also featured a special performance of the Zeybek dance, a traditional Turkish folk dance.

Adding a personal touch, the event included heartwarming stories shared by the first immigrants who arrived under a historical agreement between the two nations. This exchange of memories undoubtedly strengthened the bond between the communities.

Promoting Turkish coffee across Europe

Additionally, a “Coffee Day” event was held, where guests were treated to Moroccan mint tea and Turkish coffee.

The event was organized by a collaborative effort between Turkish mosque associations and Turkish language and culture teachers. Erol Kahraman, president of the Liege Diyanet Central Mosque association, delivered a heartfelt speech at the gathering.

Kahraman’s words resonated with the audience: “We’re here today to commemorate the 60th anniversary of our fathers who bravely migrated here six decades ago and toiled in the mines. It’s a privilege to celebrate Coffee Day alongside our Moroccan friends. We look forward to many more years of fostering this beautiful connection. Our hardworking elders paved the way for our good fortune, and their memory lives on in our hearts.”

Nadir Akbolat, a Türkiye culture teacher in Liege and coordinator of the Türkiye coffee event, said: “We are trying to promote Turkish coffee, which is recognized by UNESCO, in Belgium and spread it throughout Europe from here.” 

“To celebrate the 60th anniversary of the arrival of the Turkish labor community, we organized a special day under the theme ‘Coffee’s Friendship, Friendship’s Coffee.’ Today, our aim was to share Turkish coffee culture, celebrate our heritage, and strengthen bonds with the Moroccan community.”

Belgian politicians and guests also shared their memories during the event.
