China reassures Iran of support while urging restraint in the Middle East following the embassy attack

China expressed confidence in Iran’s ability to “handle the situation well and spare the region further turmoil” while upholding its sovereignty and dignity amid the aftermath of an attack on Iran’s embassy in Syria and its retaliatory strike over the weekend.

In a phone call on Monday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi conveyed to his Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian that China appreciated Iran’s commitment to avoiding targeting regional and neighboring countries.

Wang Yi also acknowledged Iran’s characterization of its actions as limited and in self-defense, firmly condemning the embassy attack as “unacceptable.”

After being briefed on Iran’s stance, Amirabdollahian assured Wang that Iran is cognizant of the regional tensions, is prepared to exercise restraint, and has no intentions of further escalation.

Tensions remain elevated in the Middle East following Israel’s pledge to respond to Iran’s attack, prompting several countries to appeal for restraint. Since the missile attack on Saturday night, numerous countries, including Germany, France, and the U.K., have summoned Iranian ambassadors.
