Reddit, the internet’s most popular forum network, was experiencing widespread outages and errors Wednesday.

According to Downdetector, a site that tracks internet service disruptions, user reports of problems with Reddit began to surge just before 4 p.m. ET on August 28. At the peak, more than 149,000 error reports were logged. Users encountering issues on the site were met with messages such as “We have encountered an error. Please try again later” and “We were unable to load the content for this page.” The Reddit app was also impacted by the outages, according to Downdetector data.

Reddit acknowledged the issue and stated that the issue was identified and a fix is underway on their X account.

This isn’t the first time Reddit has experienced technical challenges. The platform has a history of outages, including a major disruption in August of last year and a five-hour outage in March 2023. Despite these setbacks, Reddit remains a prominent online community, boasting over 100,000 active communities on various topics and interests worldwide.

Earlier this year, Reddit took a significant step in its growth trajectory by launching an Initial Public Offering (IPO) in March, raising $519 million. The company, often referred to as “the front page of the internet,” reported 2023 revenue of $804.0 million, marking a 21% increase year-over-year. However, it also reported a net loss of $90.8 million, which was an improvement compared to the $158.6 million loss reported the previous year.

In the second quarter of this year, Reddit saw a 51% year-over-year increase in daily active unique users, reaching 91.2 million. The company’s revenue for the quarter rose 54% year-over-year to $281.2 million, while it managed to narrow its net loss to $10.1 million, a significant improvement from the $41.1 million loss reported in the same quarter last year.
