New protests erupt in India after doctor’s rape and murder

Clashes erupted between protesters and police in West Bengal, India, after a doctor was raped and murdered in a hospital. According to NDTV, demonstrators gathered in central Kolkata and attempted to march towards the state secretariat.

Police used tear gas and water cannons to stop the march, while protesters responded by throwing stones and sticks. Footage showed some protesters breaking and kicking barriers during the confrontation.

No official statement has been made regarding any casualties.

The 31-year-old female doctor from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata was found dead on August 9 after a 36-hour shift. She was discovered in a seminar room, as there was no designated resting area for staff. Her body had severe injuries. A hospital volunteer was detained, and the case has since been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) amid allegations of cover-up and negligence.

Doctors across India have announced an indefinite strike in protest of the incident.
