Türkiye submits 3 new cultural heritage Items for UNESCO recognition

The Ministry of Culture and Tourism has nominated three more cultural heritage elements to UNESCO for consideration at the 20th Intergovernmental Committee Meeting on Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2025: Yogurt, felt and Antep embroidery

Türkiye’s commitment to sharing its rich intangible cultural heritage with the world through UNESCO continues.

As part of this effort, the Ministry of Culture and Tourism’s General Directorate of Living Heritage and Cultural Activities has prepared three new candidate files for evaluation by UNESCO next year under the Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage.

In this context, Antep embroidery, which is made by counting and pulling threads on white fabric, traditional felt making created by fusing the scales on animal fibers such as wool by friction due to temperature, humidity and pressure, and traditional methods of yogurt-making and related social practices were submitted to UNESCO by Türkiye to be added to the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Several cultural practices were submitted for UNESCO inscription. Antep embroidery was submitted by Türkiye as a national element. Traditional yogurt-making and social practices associated with it were submitted jointly by Bulgaria and Türkiye, with Türkiye leading the application. Finally, traditional felt-making was submitted as a multinational element under the leadership of Kyrgyzstan, with participation from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Mongolia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Türkiye.

With 30 cultural heritage items registered in the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage List, Türkiye is the second country to register the most cultural values.
