Charges dropped in controversial Galatasaray-Fenerbahce derby incident

Istanbul Public Prosecutor’s Office announced it would not pursue charges against three individuals, including Galatasaray player Kerem Akturkoglu.
The decision came after an investigation into a post-match incident following the Galatasaray-Fenerbahce derby in the Trendyol Super Lig.
Fenerbahce had filed a legal complaint against several Galatasaray officials and players after the derby, which took place on May 19, 2024, and ended in a 1-0 victory for Fenerbahce.
Fenerbahce alleged that their team and staff were physically prevented from celebrating their victory on the field by Galatasaray personnel.
The situation escalated into a physical confrontation involving members of both clubs. The complaint included accusations of “intentional injury,” “theft,” and “obstructing the exercise of freedom of thought and expression.”
Lack of evidence leads to dismissal of charges in Fenerbahce’s post-match complaint
The prosecutor’s office found that there was insufficient evidence to support the accusations. Specifically, the investigation revealed no concrete proof linking the accused individuals to the alleged crimes. The office stated: “There is no video evidence that Akturkoglu or Galatasaray General Secretary Eray Yazgan participated in any criminal activity during the incident.”
The investigation also noted that while Fenerbahce claimed Rams Park Stadium Manager Ali Celikkiran assaulted their team members and seized their flag, surveillance footage did not confirm these allegations.
The prosecutor further clarified that Celikkiran’s actions, such as attempting to stop the Fenerbahce team from taking photos with their flag, did not constitute the alleged crimes. “Celikkiran did not use force or violence, and therefore his actions cannot be considered under the charge of theft,” the office concluded.
Impact on Galatasaray’s captaincy, ongoing legal proceedings against others
Despite the dismissal of charges, the incident has left a significant impact on the dynamics between the two clubs. In a related development, Galatasaray did not reinstate Kerem Akturkoglu to the captaincy during a subsequent match against Young Boys.
Addressing the situation, Akturkoglu stated: “I have strived to fulfill the captaincy role to the best of my ability and to carry this title with honor. Even without the captain’s armband, I will continue to take initiative on and off the field as needed.”
Meanwhile, formal charges have been filed against five other individuals, including Fenerbahce players Jaden Quinn Oosterwolde and Mert Hakan Yandas.
These individuals face potential prison sentences for their involvement in the brawl. The case has been submitted to the Istanbul 3rd Criminal Court of First Instance.
