US Ambassador Flake praises Türkiye’s role in Gaza ceasefire efforts
U.S. Ambassador to Türkiye, Jeff Flake, commended Türkiye’s active role in the ongoing efforts to establish a ceasefire in Gaza on Wednesday, highlighting its importance in achieving lasting peace in the region.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara, Flake emphasized the value of Türkiye’s involvement, stating, “We particularly welcome Türkiye’s role in the ceasefire efforts. Following the ceasefire, we aim for a permanent peace, which can only be achieved through a two-state solution.”
Flake underscored the pain and devastation caused by the ongoing conflict in Gaza, noting the United States’ efforts to limit civilian casualties while responding to Hamas’s attacks. He acknowledged that the U.S. has been actively encouraging its allies in the region to assist in achieving a ceasefire, viewing it as a crucial step towards ending the loss of civilian lives.
The ambassador also pointed out Türkiye’s unique position in the region, explaining that Türkiye is able to engage with groups that the U.S. cannot communicate with directly. “We are encouraging our counterparts and partners to de-escalate tensions wherever possible,” Flake added.
In his remarks, Flake also touched upon the broader implications of Türkiye’s role, emphasizing the country’s potential to positively influence the situation. He stated, “Türkiye, as a regional power, needs to be positively involved in ensuring that the peace following the ceasefire is sustainable.”
