Starting in 2025, Türkiye will implement a nationwide Deposit Return System (DYS) to recycle 25 billion glass, PET, and aluminum beverage containers annually. The system, spearheaded by the Ministry of Environment, Urbanization, and Climate Change, will contribute at least 5 billion TL (approximately $149,136,650.00) to the economy.

How it works?

  • Consumers will pay a deposit when purchasing beverages, which will be refunded upon returning the empty containers.
  • The DYS will be rolled out across 5,000 recycling points nationwide in 2025, expanding to 30,000 points by 2028.
  • Citizens can return containers using reverse vending machines and receive refunds via e-wallets.

Environmental impact

According to the Recycling and Recovery Association (GEKADER), the DYS is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions significantly, save 1.3 billion kWh of energy, and conserve 3.6 million barrels of oil annually.

The system will also create approximately 20,000 new jobs.
