The Turkish Parliament will convene at 2 p.m. local time on Friday for the imprisoned Workers’ Party of Türkiye (TIP) Hatay MP Can Atalay.

The extraordinary session is prompted by a recent ruling from the Constitutional Court, which declared the revocation of Can Atalay’s parliamentary seat invalid. The court found that “it is not possible to examine a request related to a legally non-existent process.”

Following the ruling, Atalay’s lawyers have requested his release from prison, and Atalay himself has called for the restoration of his parliamentary status.

A joint petition from the Republican People’s Party (CHP), DEM Party, Saadet Party, Future Party, TIP, DEVA Party, and the Labor Party led to the extraordinary session being scheduled.

On Aug. 15, 2024, Parliament will also host Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.
