Türkiye’s youth population to significantly decline by 2050, 2100

Türkiye’s youth population is on a troubling downward trend, with projections showing a significant decline by 2050 and even more so by 2100.

As of 2023, the world’s population stands at 8.04 billion, with 1.24 billion individuals aged 15-24. Türkiye’s population, recorded at 85.37 million, includes 12.87 million young people, representing 15.1% of the total population.

Notably, this figure falls below the global average of 15.5%. While Syria has the highest youth population percentage at 24.1%, Ukraine records the lowest at 6.8%.

Projections for 2050

According to projections by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), Türkiye’s youth population could decrease significantly by 2050.

Under the main scenario, the youth population is expected to be around 9.1 million, accounting for 9.66% of the total population. A lower scenario projects the youth population to drop to 8.3 million, representing 9.29% of the total population, while a higher scenario estimates 9.9 million youths, making up 10.03% of the population.

Long-term outlook for 2100

Looking further ahead to 2100, TurkStat’s projections show even more drastic declines. The main scenario predicts that the youth population will fall to 7.3 million, constituting 9.55% of the total population.

The lower scenario is particularly alarming, forecasting a reduction to just 3.9 million, or 7.2% of the total population. Conversely, the higher scenario suggests the youth population could reach 11.5 million, representing 11.43% of the total population.
