US Ambassador Flake’s final reflections on his unique role in Türkiye
As US Ambassador Jeff Flake prepares to conclude his tenure in Türkiye, he looks back on a three-year period marked by profound personal and cultural experiences. Flake, who has served in Ankara since his arrival with anticipation and enthusiasm, acknowledges the unique and enriching journey that has shaped both his professional and personal life.
The US Embassy Residence, a historic and welcoming space, became a hub for the Flake family, where they celebrated American holidays and traditions with Turkish friends and dignitaries. “This is our 1950s-style cinema room,” Flake said, pointing to a room where his family enjoyed watching films and sports together, creating lasting memories.
Immersing in Türkiye’s rich landscape
The Flake family immersed themselves in Türkiye’s diverse landscape, traveling extensively and partaking in local experiences. Highlights include a memorable hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia and a visit to Anıtkabir during the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye. “We visited Anıtkabir during the 100th anniversary of the Republic of Türkiye, a memory we will always cherish,” Flake noted.
Flake expressed deep admiration for Türkiye’s vibrant culture and historical landmarks. A family photo taken at Istanbul’s Hagia Sophia Mosque, a site they often visited, symbolizes their appreciation. “We love the view from Hagia Sophia; it never gets old. It’s truly a beautiful place,” he said.
Unforgettable experiences and lasting impressions
Among his many experiences, Flake recounted a particularly memorable moment: reenacting a chase scene from the movie Skyfall across the rooftops of the Grand Bazaar. “It was so much fun, like being James Bond,” he laughed. He also fondly recalled swimming in the Bosphorus and exploring Türkiye’s coastal areas.
The Feb. 6, 2023, earthquake in Kahramanmaras stands out as a poignant reminder of the resilience of the Turkish people. “Visiting the earthquake zone and witnessing the global community come together to help Türkiye was deeply moving,” Flake said.
As the Flake family prepares to depart, their experiences in Türkiye have left a lasting impact. Cheryl Flake, who had previously studied in Türkiye, reflects on the warmth and hospitality they encountered. “The kindness and generosity of the Turkish people have made a lasting impression on me,” she said.
