Türkiye applies to intervene in genocide case against Israel

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan announced that Türkiye has submitted an application to the International Court of Justice to intervene in the genocide case against Israel. He shared the news on his social media account.
“We have just submitted our application for intervention in the genocide case against Israel to the International Court of Justice. Israel, emboldened by the impunity of its crimes, is killing more innocent Palestinians every day. The international community must pressure Israel and its supporters to stop the genocide. To this end, Türkiye will make every effort,” Fidan said in his statement.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized the need for justice in Gaza in a statement released on its official website.
“The Republic of South Africa filed an application against Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) alleging that Israel had violated its obligations under the 1948 Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. Our country has been following this case.
Our Minister announced our country’s decision to intervene in the case on May 1, 2024, following meticulous evaluations regarding the possibilities of intervention,” the statement read.
On Aug. 7, 2024, as a party to the Genocide Convention under Article 63 of the Statute of the ICJ, our ministry coordinated the comprehensive legal work that resulted in the submission of our Declaration of Intervention regarding the application to the court.
“Our decision to intervene reflects the importance that our country places on resolving the Palestinian issue within the framework of law and justice.
The conscience of humanity and international law will hold Israeli officials to account,” the statement added.
