OIC to address Israeli violations in emergency meeting
The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) will hold an extraordinary meeting at the foreign ministers’ level on Wednesday, Aug. 7, to discuss Israel’s violations against the Palestinian people.
Key issues on agenda
According to a written statement from the OIC, the meeting will address the assassination of Hamas Political Bureau Chief Ismail Haniyeh and the violation of Iran’s sovereignty. The ongoing violations against the Palestinian people, especially in the Gaza Strip, will also be discussed.
The “OIC Open Participation Executive Committee Extraordinary Meeting” meeting will be held at the OIC General Headquarters in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, at the foreign ministers’ level.
Heavy toll on lives in conflict
Since Oct. 7, the conflict in the Gaza Strip has resulted in the deaths of 39,583 Palestinians, including 16,314 children and 10,980 women, and left 91,398 people injured. Many believed to be remain buried under the rubble, while hospitals and educational institutions have also been targeted during the conflict, causing significant damage to civilian infrastructure.
The Israel Defense Forces have reported that since October 7, 331 soldiers were killed during the ground invasion, bringing the total to 684 military casualties.
In the West Bank and Jerusalem, 604 Palestinians have been killed in attacks by Israeli soldiers and Israeli settlers since October 7, 2023.
During a four-day humanitarian pause starting on November 24, 2023, which was later extended by three more days, 81 Israeli and 240 Palestinian prisoners were exchanged.
