The United States is significantly increasing its military presence in the Middle East in response to rising threats from Iran.

The Pentagon has announced the deployment of the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group, along with additional cruisers, destroyers and fighter jets, to support regional defenses and assist Israel, which is preparing for potential military actions by Iran and its proxies – Hamas and Hezbollah.

The U.S. Navy has sent 12 warships, including the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, to the region.

Approximately 4,000 Marines and sailors are onboard these vessels, marking a robust show of force.

The USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group is expected to leave once the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group arrives.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin emphasized the U.S.’s commitment to Israel’s security and mentioned forthcoming “force posture moves.”

He highlighted that de-escalation would benefit all parties involved, particularly through completing a Gaza cease-fire and hostage release deal. Austin conveyed this message during a discussion with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant, addressing threats posed by Iran and its allies.

Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh reiterated this stance, noting that further escalation is not inevitable. She stressed the unprecedented level of U.S. support for Israel since Oct. 7, signaling a strong message to Iran and its proxies about U.S. resolve.

In a sharp response, the Commander of the Iranian Army warned: “If the United States intervenes this time, we will target all of its bases and military interests in the region.”

While the number is far lower after withdrawal from Afghanistan in 2021, there are still about 30,000 U.S. troops scattered across the region.

In addition, since the Israel-Hamas war began in October, the U.S. has temporarily sent thousands of additional troops to the region, including on warships.

The largest U.S. base in the Middle East is located in Qatar, known as Al Udeid Air Base and built in 1996.

Other countries where the U.S. has a presence include Bahrain, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
