Golan criticized Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, accusing him of fostering a climate that allows for “armed militias” aimed at undermining the rule of law. He condemned the Knesset members’ actions, labeling the raid as an attempt to “turn the Israeli army into armed militias.”

Those who took part in the protest included Heritage Minister Amichai Eliyahu and Knesset member Tzvi Succot. Opposition leader Yair Lapid also weighed in, suggesting that Netanyahu has lost control over his government. Lapid described the situation as an “attempted coup” and criticized the prime minister’s inability to manage his administration effectively.

The unrest followed reports from Israeli media detailing severe abuse against a detainee from the Gaza Strip, who was allegedly gang-raped by soldiers at Sde Teiman Prison. Israeli public broadcaster KAN reported that the detainee was hospitalized with severe injuries, impairing his ability to walk. Israel’s Army Radio confirmed that ten soldiers are being questioned in connection with the abuse.

Since the onset of the Israeli military operation in Gaza on October 7, 2023, there have been numerous reports of mistreatment of Palestinian detainees. The ongoing offensive has resulted in significant casualties and devastation in Gaza, with over 39,360 Palestinians reported killed and nearly 91,000 injured.

International condemnation has mounted as Israel continues its assault, which has been described as a violation of a UN Security Council resolution calling for an immediate cease-fire. The International Court of Justice has also accused Israel of genocide and has demanded an end to its military operations, particularly in the southern city of Rafah, which had been a refuge for over a million Palestinians before the area was invaded in May.

Yair Golan, the leader of Israel’s Labor Party, called on Monday for the imprisonment of Knesset members who participated in a dramatic protest by storming a military base in the Negev desert. The demonstration was in response to the arrest of soldiers accused of gang-raping a Palestinian detainee at Sde Teiman Prison.
