Touristic Diyarbakir Express named as ‘one of world’s greatest destinations’

The Touristic Diyarbakir Express, launched on April 19, 2024, has significantly boosted the tourism sector in southeastern Türkiye.

This scenic train journey from Ankara to Diyarbakir has received recognition from Time magazine as one of the “World’s Greatest Places of 2024,” increasing its popularity among travelers.

Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu expressed his satisfaction with the train’s success, saying, “Our train, the Touristic Diyarbakir Express, contributes to the regional economy by showcasing the historical and cultural values along its route.”

He emphasized the train’s role in providing an unforgettable experience for its passengers and promoting Türkiye’s new vision of rail tourism.

The Diyarbakir Express covers 1,051 kilometers (653.0 miles) and accommodates 180 passengers. It features six sleeper cabins and a dining car, offering a comfortable and immersive travel experience.

Passengers can enjoy Turkish delicacies like grilled meatballs while gazing at the ever-changing landscapes through their windows.

Scenic journey through historical sites with Diyarbakir Express

The route of the Diyarbakir Express takes passengers through some of Türkiye’s most remarkable landscapes and historical sites.

Starting from Ankara, the train travels eastward across the Anatolian steppe and the rugged eastern mountains, finally reaching the northern plains of Mesopotamia.

One of the key stops is Malatya, known for its Bronze Age site Arslantepe, which features ancient wall paintings dating back to 3000 B.C.

Here, passengers can explore this archaeological wonder and taste the famous Malatya apricots.

On the return journey, the train stops in Elazig, where visitors can explore Harput Castle, an ancient fortress with panoramic views of the surrounding area.

Another notable stop is Kayseri, a city rich in Seljuk heritage and situated near the dormant volcano Mount Erciyes. Passengers can explore historical sites and enjoy the stunning backdrop of the snow-capped peak.

The final destination, Diyarbakir, is a city with a vibrant history and culture. Encircled by impressive black basalt walls constructed in the 4th century, Diyarbakir’s historical significance is evident in its numerous mosques, churches, and bustling markets.

The city offers a unique blend of ancient roots and modern vibes, making it a captivating destination for travelers.

Time Magazine’s recognition of Diyarbakir Express

The Diyarbakir Express’s inclusion in Time magazine’s list has significantly boosted the region’s tourism. Mehmet Sabahattin Genc, the provincial director of culture and tourism, noted that Diyarbakir welcomed 1.25 million tourists last year and expressed optimism that this number will increase, particularly among foreign tourists.

“This recognition has given a serious boost to our economy and tourism,” Genc said, emphasizing the importance of promoting the destination globally and domestically.

Efforts are underway to host tourism journalists, travel agencies and tour operators, which will enhance the region’s tourism appeal further.

The Diyarbakir Express offers more than just a means of transportation; it provides a cultural and scenic adventure through Türkiye’s diverse landscapes.

Travelers are encouraged to book their tickets in advance, pack appropriately for exploring historical sites, and make the most of the onboard amenities. Engaging with local communities and experiencing their traditions is also a highlight of the journey.
