EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell, in his speech at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, said that they expect many EU countries to recognize the Palestinian state by the end of May

Josep Borrell said in a speech at the World Economic Forum in Riyadh on Monday that many E.U. member states may recognize Palestine as a sovereign state.

In March, Spain, Ireland, Malta and Slovenia declared their collaboration in recognizing the sovereign status of Palestine. In his official statement, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez declared that his government would officially recognize Palestine as a sovereign state. He emphasized that resolving the conflict in Gaza and ensuring Israel’s security could only be achieved through this course of action.

Spain has been among nations that have condemned Israel’s belligerent stance and halted their acknowledgment of the Palestinian state since October 7, 2023.

Several European Union member states are in disagreement with the decision to officially acknowledge the state of Palestine.

While Spain and three other countries have chosen to recognize Palestine, Germany, Austria, and England have expressed their opposition to doing so. It is still a subject of curiosity to know the stance that these countries, which are the driving forces of the E.U., will adopt at the upcoming E.U. summit scheduled for June.
