Democrats are searching for a candidate to challenge Trump, with Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi among the top contenders following U.S. President Joe Biden’s withdrawal.
With President Joe Biden announcing his withdrawal from the upcoming presidential election on Nov. 5, attention has shifted to the Democratic Party’s candidate race.
Here are some potential Democratic contenders who are likely to face Trump: They include Kamala Harris, Michelle Obama, Nancy Pelosi, Gretchen Whitmer, Joe Manchin, JB Pritzker, Josh Shapiro, Pete Buttigieg and Gavin Newsom.
Despite the abundance of male candidates, the strongest contenders for the White House appear to be women. The American media references the famous series “Game of Thrones” with headlines like “Women’s Game of Thrones.”
Despite Biden’s declaration that Harris is his vice president, Harris’s candidacy will only gain confirmation if she garners sufficient votes at the Democratic National Convention.
Eyes on Obama
Even if Harris accepts Biden’s offer, she faces strong competitors for the presidential nomination, including her fellow women, Michelle Obama and Nancy Pelosi.
Despite Michelle Obama’s previous assertions of “not being a candidate,” recent polls highlight her as the “only candidate capable of defeating Trump.” Barack Obama’s lack of endorsement for Harris has further fueled speculation about Michelle’s potential candidacy.
Pelosi eyes candidacy
Nancy Pelosi is another formidable rival for Harris. The Speaker of the House enjoys significant support within the party.
While Pelosi remains silent on her candidacy, it is known that prominent Democrats back her. Pelosi is reportedly gauging support to enter the Democratic Party’s convention in Chicago next month from a strong position.
Other candidates
As for other contenders, Gretchen Whitmer asserts, “Generation X wants me,” while California Governor Gavin Newsom is popular among Democrats.
Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg also harbors presidential ambitions. Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro, known for his “anti-Trump” stance, claims to be the only one capable of defeating Trump.
JB Pritzker, owner of the Hyatt Hotels, is also a prominent figure in the anti-Trump camp.
Additionally, Joe Manchin, a self-described “independent Democrat” and Senator from West Virginia, has stated he is “seriously considering” a run.
Polling favors Michelle Obama
Former Democratic President Barack Obama has not issued a support message for Kamala Harris, which has intensified speculation about Michelle Obama’s candidacy.
Recent polls support Michelle Obama’s esteem as one of the strongest presidential contenders.
According to the latest Reuters and Ipsos surveys, participants believe Michelle Obama is the strongest candidate to defeat Trump. In a Trump versus Michelle Obama matchup, 50% of participants said they would vote for Obama, while Trump received 39% support. In a Harris versus Trump comparison, participants favored Trump at 43% versus Harris at 42%.
107 days left: ‘We can do it’
Following Biden’s declaration of Harris as his presidential candidate, attention turned to Vice President Kamala Harris.
On Monday, Harris officially announced her candidacy for the Democratic presidential nomination.
Harris expressed her wholehearted belief in defeating Trump, saying: “We have 107 days until Election Day. We will fight together. And together, we will win.”
“Over the past year, I have traveled nationwide, speaking with Americans about the clear choice in this critical election.”
“I will continue to do so in the coming days and weeks. I will do everything in my power to unite the Democratic Party and our nation to defeat Donald Trump and his radical Project 2025 agenda. We can succeed,” she added.
