4.7 magnitude earthquake hits Türkiye, minor structural damage

4.7 magnitude earthquake struck the Ezine district of Canakkale, Türkiye at approximately 17:39 local time, according to the Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD). The quake, originating at a depth of 10.23 kilometers, was also felt in Izmir.

The Kandilli Observatory reported the quake’s magnitude as 4.9, with its epicenter in Bahceli-Ezine and a depth of 12.9 kilometers.

Following the tremor, reports emerged of cracks forming in the walls of some homes. The Canakkale Governor’s Office, AFAD, and other officials initiated damage assessment efforts. Fortunately, there were no casualties reported.

Security camera footage captured the moment when a shopkeeper, feeling the tremor, hurried outside. The earthquake caused considerable fear and panic among residents, yet no damage was reported in Canakkale’s central and other districts.

AFAD teams began field investigations in Ezine as instructed by the Canakkale Governorship. Life returned to normal shortly after the earthquake.

Vice President Cevdet Yilmaz extended his well-wishes to those affected, saying, “I convey my past wishes to our citizens affected by the earthquake felt in Canakkale, Istanbul, and surrounding provinces. AFAD and our relevant institutions continue their field scanning activities. May God protect our country and nation from all kinds of disasters.”

Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya provided updates via social media, stating, “AFAD and our related institutions have started field scans. At present, there are no adverse conditions. We are evaluating all calls received by the 112 Emergency Call Center.”

Canakkale Governor Omer Toraman confirmed that no significant damage or injuries were reported, saying, “No negative situations have been encountered during field scanning, and no reports have been received.”

Ezine Mayor Guray Yuksel also addressed the situation, noting, “So far, there is no negative situation. It was a frightening earthquake. May God protect us from worse. We have not received any reports of destruction so far. We cannot say it was a long earthquake.”

The earthquake, while causing alarm and minor structural damage, resulted in no casualties and minimal disruption. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and assess any potential risks or further damage.
