At least four people died in two separate incidents of fire that occurred overnight in the same neighborhood of Paris on Tuesday, officials said.
Early in the morning, authorities discovered three bodies in a seventh-floor apartment near the Opera Garnier in the heart of the French capital. Experts believe the fire on the Boulevard des Italiens began between 4 a.m. and 5 a.m.
According to Ariel Weil, mayor of the city’s four central districts, those killed “couldn’t get out of the window because of bars installed to prevent burglars getting in via the roof.”
Weil also reported that firefighters entered through the roof to rescue about 10 people living on the same floor.
Weil and a police source stated that investigators were examining the possibility that the fire may have originated from a gas leak.
