Tourist arrivals increased by 10.1% within a three-month period, reaching 9 million visitors, with 21% being Turkish citizens living abroad

Türkiye’s tourism sector enjoyed a robust start to the year, with revenues increasing by 5.4% to reach $8.8 billion in the January to March period, as reported by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) on Tuesday.

Over the three-month span, visitor numbers experienced a notable uptick of 10.1%, totaling 9 million individuals, with 21% of them comprising Turkish citizens residing abroad, TurkStat disclosed.

Although the average expenditure per person decreased by 4.3% year-on-year to $975, the average expenditure per night surged by 10.6% to $93.

Travel, entertainment, sports, and cultural activities remained the primary attraction for tourists, constituting 46% of visits. This was followed by visits to relatives and friends at 31.3% and shopping at 9.6%.

Notably, a significant majority of Turkish citizens living abroad, approximately 73.6%, traveled to Türkiye primarily to visit relatives and friends.
