New York police enter Columbia University’s campus to disperse a student group organizing a demonstration in support of Palestine

New York police intervened against Columbia University students who organized a peaceful protest demanding a cease-fire for Gaza, while several students were detained.

According to information reported by local media outlets, the raid by the New York police on peaceful demonstrators at Columbia University lasted for two hours.

Police arrived at Columbia University’s campus in New York and detained pro-Palestinian students who were protesting in historic Hamilton Hall.

Some time ago, police intervened and dispersed the Gaza Solidarity Camp, which was set up by students at Columbia University’s Morningside Heights Campus.

In addition, the police faced protests from the public gathered on the Amsterdam Avenue side of the building.

New York police also removed tents from the Gaza Solidarity Camp at the university.

The incident at Columbia University brought back to the agenda the debate on the “freedom of expression” restrictions against Palestinian students at US universities that began after October 7, 2023, and student protests against the arrests spread to other universities across the country.

Now Student protests in support of Palestine are ongoing at over 50 major universities across the U.S., and police have reportedly arrested over 1000 students, including some lecturers, in the last two weeks.
