Wildfire erupts in Izmir, prompting extensive response

A wildfire that erupted Thursday afternoon between the Gaziemir and Buca districts of Izmir continues to be battled by both aerial and ground crews.
The blaze, which began in a neighborhood, has prompted a large-scale response from multiple agencies. The General Directorate of Forestry has deployed four night-vision helicopters, 40 fire trucks, nine water supply vehicles, four bulldozers, and four ground teams to control the fire.
In addition, the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has contributed 21 tankers and five fire trucks, while the Provincial Police Department’s Tactical Unit has sent five water cannons to support the effort.
Firefighting teams have managed to prevent the flames from threatening residential areas. Residents who were evacuated from homes remain in the area, awaiting further updates.
The Regional Forestry Directorate reported that the fire, which started at 1:15 p.m., spread into the Buca district and was initially addressed by 1:25 p.m. The response included seven aircraft, 16 helicopters, 35 fire trucks, 11 water supply vehicles, and a number of firefighters.
The smoke from the fire caused disruptions at Adnan Menderes Airport, affecting flight schedules. However, air traffic returned to normal by the evening.
Additionally, five helicopters from the Turkish Land Forces Command supported the firefighting efforts.
