Toronto embraces Turkish cinema with film writer Irmak’s movie

The film “Sevda Mecburi Istikamet” (Love’s Mandatory Destination) thrilled audiences at the Lavazza IncluCity Festival in Toronto.

Supported by the Turkish Consulate General in Toronto and the Yunus Emre Institute, the event took place in the Distillery District’s open-air cinema.

On July 14, attendees gathered at the Trinity Cinema in the Distillery District for the film screening. The outdoor venue provided a unique experience with wireless headphones distributed to the audience.

“Sevda Mecburi Istikamet,” directed by renowned Turkish film writer Cagan Irmak, was among the most popular films at the festival, drawing significant interest.

Consul General Can Yoldas and Yunus Emre Institute Toronto Director Bulent Ucpinar attended the event, highlighting the importance of cultural exchange and the arts. The film features stars such as Selcuk Yontem, Selin Sekerci and Kubilay Aka.

It tells a poignant story set from the 1970s to the 2000s, following a famous actor’s journey to reconcile with his daughter. Singer and songwriter Teoman’s evocative music accompanies the film.

Cagan Irmak’s latest film marks his return to cinema after four years. His last film, “Bizi Hatirla,”(Remember Us) was released in 2018. Irmak also wrote the screenplay for “Sevda Mecburi Istikamet,” which premiered in Türkiye on Jan. 6.
