Turkish journalist Kurtulus Demirbas, who was detained in Taif, Saudi Arabia, for six days, is released on Thursday following diplomatic intervention by Turkish authorities. The release comes after Türkiye Today highlighted Demirbas’ plight, leading to actions by consular officials.

Demirbas, a cameraman on assignment to cover U19 football matches, was detained on July 6 at the Taif King Fahd Stadium. His wife, Pinar Demirbas, who had last spoken to him on July 5, disclosed three unidentified individuals detained him after checking his passport.

Upon his release, the Turkish Foreign Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding its citizens abroad. “We formally requested information from Saudi authorities without delay. The matter was followed closely, and the family was regularly updated,” a ministry official stated.

His detention, reportedly linked to comments he made about the murder of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi, prompted the Turkish Foreign Ministry to request information from Saudi authorities.
