Türkiye commemorates Srebrenica genocide on July 11 as day of remembrance
Türkiye has officially declared July 11 as the “International Day of Reflection and Remembrance of the Srebrenica Genocide,” in a significant move.
This decision announced through a presidential decree published in the Official Gazette on Wednesday, aims to honor the victims of the Srebrenica genocide and raise global awareness.
The decree references the United Nations resolution, adopted on May 23, which designates July 11 as Srebrenica Genocide Remembrance Day.
The U.N. resolution, overwhelmingly supported by the General Assembly, was spearheaded by Germany and co-sponsored by over 40 countries.
It unequivocally condemns actions that glorify individuals convicted by international courts for war crimes, crimes against humanity, and genocide, including those responsible for the 1995 Srebrenica genocide in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Türkiye’s decree emphasizes the importance of commemorating this day to share the pain, condemn genocide and crimes against humanity, and raise global awareness.
It outlines plans for special remembrance events, educational activities and public awareness initiatives in honor of the Srebrenica genocide victims.
The declaration aligns with the international community’s efforts to reflect on and remember the tragic events of Srebrenica, ensuring that the memory of the victims is preserved and that such atrocities are never repeated.
