Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloglu stated that preparations are underway for the launch of Türkiye’s first domestic communication satellite Turksat 6A, emphasizing its significance as a symbol of independence for Türkiye.

According to a statement from the ministry, Turksat 6A, Türkiye’s first domestic communication satellite produced by Turkish engineers, will be launched into orbit from Kennedy Space Center in Florida, USA, tonight at 00:20, with Minister Uraloglu in attendance.

Following the midnight launch, President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to broadcast a video message. Minister Uraloglu will also establish a live connection from Kennedy Space Center to convey the excitement to Türkiye.

‘Symbol of independence’

In his statement, Uraloglu highlighted that preparations for the launch operations are progressing smoothly.

“We are following the preparations closely. Tonight, by successfully launching Turksat 6A, the symbol of our independence, we will become one of the 11 countries producing their own satellites and leave our mark in space,” Uraloglu said.

He further explained the post-launch process for the satellite:

“After the launch, our satellite will travel using its chemical propulsion system and reach its permanent orbit at 35,786 kilometers, located at 42 degrees east longitude. We plan to commence orbit tests there. Following approximately one month of tests, we will take delivery of the satellite and put it into operation.”

Uraloglu emphasized that Turksat 6A is one of Türkiye’s most significant R&D projects, achieving over 80% localization by Turkish engineers.

“Our satellite will meet Türkiye’s satellite communication needs, including TV broadcasting, communication services, and extensive coverage area. Additionally, it will cover regions where existing satellites do not provide services, including India, Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia, serving a population of 5 billion,” he added.
