Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev condemns unjust Demiral punishment
Azerbaijan President Ilham Aliyev expressed support for Merih Demiral and the Turkish national team ahead of their Euro 2024 quarterfinal match against the Netherlands.
Aliyev, in a post on his official X account, backed Turkish national player Merih Demiral, who received a two-match ban for making a wolf gesture during the Austria game at the Euro football championship held in Germany.
“I congratulate the brotherly Turkish national team for qualifying for the quarter-finals and being among the top 8 strongest European teams in the European Championship held in Germany. Especially, I congratulate Merih Demiral, who was chosen as the best player of the match after scoring 2 goals in the Round of 16. The punishment imposed on Merih is unjust and I strongly condemn it. I wish success to the Turkish national team in their match against the Netherlands! Long live the Turkic world!” Aliyev said.
The Azerbaijani president also sent wishes for the Türkiye Netherlands match slated for July 6.
Both countries are set for an exhilarating quarterfinal match, promising a clash of excitement and strategic skill.
