Germany’s Scholz welcomes President Erdogan’s visit for Euro 2024 quarterfinal

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed his enthusiasm for President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s upcoming visit to Berlin this weekend. Erdogan is set to attend the Euro 2024 quarter-final clash between Türkiye and the Netherlands at the Olympiastadion.

“We are delighted to welcome President Erdogan and numerous other heads of state and government, along with several royal dignitaries who will be joining us for the games,” Chancellor Scholz remarked during a press briefing in Berlin.

Erdogan’s visit follows Türkiye’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Austria in the round of 16, securing their spot in the quarterfinals. They face off against the Netherlands on Saturday evening, kickstarting at 1900 GMT.

When asked about a potential meeting with President Erdogan, Chancellor Scholz acknowledged their frequent communications but noted scheduling challenges amidst the influx of international leaders visiting Germany for Euro 2024 matches.

“I maintain regular contact with President Erdogan, both through phone calls and meetings at international gatherings. However, with the current influx of leaders attending matches, bilateral meetings are selectively arranged, primarily coinciding with shared match attendance, ” he said.

Erdogan to support national team on the field

President Erdogan, expressing his support for Türkiye’s national team amidst recent controversies, including player Merih Demiral’s suspension for his celebratory gesture, reiterated his commitment to attending the match.

“Let us express our views within legal bounds and rally behind our players,” President Erdogan asserted.
