UEFA launches investigation into Merih Demiral’s goal celebration
UEFA released a statement Wednesday announcing that it has launched an investigation into alleged inappropriate behavior by Turkish soccer player Merih Demiral during the Euro 2024 round of 16 match between Austria and Türkiye.
The governing body announced the probe citing Article 31(4) of its Disciplinary Regulations. The incident occurred during the match held on July 2 in Leipzig, Germany.
Further details regarding the specific nature of the investigation will be revealed by UEFA in the coming days.
Demiral describes his goal celebration
Regarding his wolf gesture celebration after scoring, Demiral stated, “I’m thrilled to have scored two goals. I had a goal celebration in mind that reflects my Turkish heritage. After scoring, my Turkish pride ran deep, and I wanted to express it. I’m delighted that I did. All our fans are proud of us. When I saw them echoing my celebration in the stands, it inspired me to do it even more. I am very happy. I saw those who did it in the stands.
In Türkiye, we are all Turkish, and I am proud to be Turkish, and I emphasize this every time. That’s why I celebrated the goal like that. It’s completely normal, and our Turkish fans are proud of us. Hopefully, we will continue to do it. There is no message, I just wanted to show how proud and happy I am.”
