2000-year-old Turus Rock Tombs under excavation
Excavation and cleaning works have started to bring the thousands of years old Turus Rock Tombs used by the Romans and Byzantines to tourism
The Turus Rock Tombs, located on the Adiyaman-Sanliurfa Highway within the borders of Kuyulu village, have been cleaned and excavated in the last three years.
Two rock tombs have been unearthed in the excavations that started in April this year, and the tombs are being cleaned again.
The restoration and excavation of the Turus Rock Tombs, where the first excavations were carried out in 1999, were suspended until 2021.
With the Commagene Revitalization Project, 10 acres of land were cleaned, and work started again in 2021.
The piles of stones and soil inside the tombs are being cleaned. A drainage system is being built on top to prevent rainwater from entering the tombs.
Excavation and cleaning works are expected to continue until September.
Each Turus Rock Tombs, one of Adiyaman’s essential historic structures, has different architecture, reliefs, decorations, and bucraniums.
The approximately 2,000-year-old rock tombs were used during the Roman and Byzantine periods.
