Russia ready to negotiate to stop war in Ukraine
The war in Ukraine that started in February 2022 shows no signs of abating, with casualties rising on both sides. However, in a possible shift, Russia has signaled a willingness to engage in dialogue.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov while speaking to journalists in Mosow stated Russian President Vladimir Putin remains open to discussions aimed at resolving the conflict.
It remains to be seen if this translates into concrete steps toward peace. Both sides have made accusations regarding the other’s commitment to negotiations.
When asked if Russia is ready to negotiate with Ukraine through mediators, Peskov said, “Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly said that he is open to any kind of communication and dialogue to achieve the set goals. Putin is open to this and has repeatedly said so.”
Asked about the concentration of Ukrainian troops on the border with Belarus, Peskov said, “Of course, this is a cause for concern not only for Minsk but also for Moscow.”
Further complicating matters, Peskov expressed concern over a reported Ukrainian troop concentration near Belarus, a key Russian ally. This allegation could potentially hinder the path toward peace.
