‘War is moving away from being between Russia and Ukraine,’ says FM Fidan

Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, addressing the Ukraine Peace Conference in Switzerland, emphasized that the conflict is evolving beyond a war strictly between Russia and Ukraine.

Fidan underscored the devastating impact of the prolonged occupation in Ukraine, stating that casualties have exceeded 500,000 and characterizing the conflict as increasingly a war of attrition.

Expressing concerns about the escalating nature of the crisis, Fidan stressed the critical timing of the conference. He warned of two significant risks: the potential geographical spill-over of the conflict and deepening societal crises and global polarization.

Fidan also highlighted the inherent risks posed by a devastating conventional war involving weapons of mass destruction.

While acknowledging Russia’s peace conditions as steps forward, Fidan emphasized mutual suspicion between parties and the need for constructive dialogue. He lamented Russia’s absence from the conference, suggesting it hindered potential for more productive outcomes.

Türkiye’s active diplomatic role

Fidan reaffirmed Türkiye’s commitment to a comprehensive and inclusive diplomatic strategy, citing Türkiye’s active role in previous diplomatic initiatives such as the Istanbul talks and the Black Sea Grain Initiative.

Concluding his remarks, Fidan reiterated Türkiye’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity, sovereignty, and independence. He advocated for a realistic, inclusive, and practical vision for peace.

The conference in Switzerland, attended by 92 countries and 57 leaders, notably lacked China’s presence due to Russia’s exclusion.
