On Sunday, Iran’s supreme leader, Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, approved a decision to pardon or reduce the sentences of 2,654 prisoners in honor of the Eid al-Adha and Ghadir Khum holidays, as reported by state media.

Under the Iranian Constitution, the supreme leader has the authority to grant pardons or commute sentences at the request of the chief of the judiciary.

Supreme Leader Khamenei regularly exercises this prerogative on significant national occasions such as the anniversary of the 1979 revolution and religious celebrations.
